President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, May 31 toured the newly commissioned Tarlac-class Amphibious Landing Dock BRP Davao del Sur (LD-602). The commissioning was among the highlights of Navy’s 119th Anniversary Celebration at Sasa Wharf in Davao City.

The Philippine Navy now operates 2 Tarlac-class Amphibious Landing Dock. The said class of vessels can carry 500 troops, two rigid-hull inflatable boats, two landing craft units, and three helicopters. They can also house and launch Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs), truck-based mobile hospital, and different types of military vehicles.

Aboard BRP Davao del Sur, President Duterte was presented with the capabilities of the warship, including the armed AW-109 naval helicopter on board.

He was also presented with a display unit of Israeli Rafael Advanced Defense Systems’ Spike ER (extended range) Missile Launch System (MLS).

Spike ER MLS incorporated in Rafael’s Mini Typhoon remote weapon station will be installed to the three recently commissioned Multi-Purpose Attack Crafts (MPAC) of Philippine Navy, expected before the year ends.

Moreover, Philippine Navy’s first two AW-159 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters will be armed with Rafael’s Spike Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) MLS, an ultra long range version. These helicopters, being built by Leonardo formerly AgustaWestland, are expected to be delivered 2018.
