From the Manila Bulletin (May 17): Army soldier wounded in Kalinga clash with NPA

Camp Bado Dangwa, La Trinidad, Benguet – A Philippine Army soldier was wounded in an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Sitio Saltan, Barangay Balbalasang, Balbalan, Kalinga province Monday morning.
 
PFC Castro Fagronob Nestor, sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the Western Kalinga District Hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition.

The Alpha Coy 501 IB, 503rd Brigade of the Philippine Army (PA), under the command of 1st Lt. Noel Orven Baldonado was on routine patrol when they encountered the NPA rebels, which triggered the skirmish.
 
The military has yet to confirm whether or not the rebels suffered casualties.

The Balbalan municipal police station and the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) have established strategic checkpoints in Sitio Camadayan, Poblacion, Balbalan, Kalinga to plug any possible withdrawal points of the withdrawing communist armed group.
