Soldier injured in BIFF ambush in Maguindanao

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 11): Soldier injured in BIFF ambush in Maguindanao

A soldier was wounded when Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) fighters ambushed Tuesday morning government troops conducting foot patrol in Saydona Mustapha town, Maguindanao.

Senior Superintendent Agustin Tello, Maguindanao provincial police director, said about 15 BIFF fighters ambushed at 7 a.m. elements of the 40th Infantry Battalion patrolling the village of Ganta.

Tello said Private First Class Butch Albarico was slightly injured when the armed men fired rifle grenades towards the soldiers.

Tello said the soldiers were sent to the village following the reported sightings of BIFF members in the community.

"Local residents requested for Army patrol in their village after BIFF members were seen roaming around the village at night," Tello said.

The seven-man Army team, according Tello, quickly returned fire, triggering a 15 minute sporadic fire fight until the gunmen fled.

Three BIFF fighters were wounded, he added.

Tello said residents fled to safer grounds after hearing gun fires. He said three BIFF were injured in the clash that sent villagers to safer grounds.

The BIFF has been making noise lately, setting of roadside bombs in Maguindanao's second district and targeting soldiers conducting patrol in interior communities.

The BIFF is a local terrorist group that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
