Retired army shot dead

From the Sun Star-Bacolod (Mar 18): Retired army shot dead
A RETIRED member of the Philippine Army was shot to death by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) at Barangay Sibucawan, Isabela, Negros Occidental Friday.

Senior Inspector Joseph Partidas, deputy chief of Isabela Municipal Police Station, identified the fatality as Melvin Tovis, 49.

Investigation showed that Tovis and his friend were talking in front of a coffee shop when five unidentified men fired at him past 3 p.m.

Tovis succumbed to five gunshot wounds, but his friend was unharmed.

The assailants then carted away the bag of Tovis's friend containing cash amounting to P10,000 and escaped on foot.

Recovered were bullets of .45 caliber pistol.

Partidas said Tovis served as security guard of an hacienda after his retirement in 2009.

Tovis reportedly had an encounter with the rebels at Barangay San Agustin in 2016, where he got injured, Partidas added.

The police deputy said they are eyeing revenge and grudge as the motives.
