Army accuses NPA of sowing fear in North Cotabato

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 26): Army accuses NPA of sowing fear in North Cotabato

NABUNTURAN, Compostela Valley – The 10th Infantry Division commander has urged the people to call on the communist New People’s Army (NPA) to foster peace instead of sowing fear.

“It is now high time that the people voice their desire for peace and call on the communists to abandon their armed struggle, which for the last 50 years have only brought miseries to the Filipino people,” said Major General Rafael Valencia, commander of 10th Infantry (Agila) Division.

He made the appeal as he condemned the alleged forced recruitment of NPA rebels in some barangays in Antipas town in the province of North Cotabato.

In a press statement on Saturday, Valencia also accused the NPA rebels of spreading fear and panic among the people of Antipas.

"This incident clearly shows the anti-people character of the nuisance propaganda army or "NPA" of the communists,” he added.

Around 237 families fled from their homes in Barangay Camutan, Antipas to avoid being forced by the NPAs to join the communist movement, the 10th ID said in a press statement on Saturday.

The evacuation in the area started last Thursday, March 23.

The 10th ID said Antipas Mayor Egidio Cadungon already convened its Local Crisis Management Committee to facilitate the immediate care of the evacuees.
