Soldiers on Saturday overran a camp of the New People’s Army in Bansalan town after an-hour long firefight.

Soldiers on Saturday overran a camp of the New People’s Army in Bansalan town after an-hour long firefight.

In an emailed statement Sunday, the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion, which has jurisdiction over Bansalan town in Davao Del Sur, said the camp was taken over by soldiers after its occupants scampered away when they ran out of ammunition.

The camp, located in Barangay Managa, has more than 40 tents that can accommodate no fewer than a hundred NPAs.

The 39th IB said it learned of the presence of a guerilla enclave in the area from vigilant barangay folk complaining about excessive taxation by rebels roaming their villages.

The NPAs at the camp opened fire first on advancing soldiers, sparking a gunfight that lasted for an hour.

Soldiers found an M16 assault rifle, an improvised explosive device and medicines for various ailments in one of the tents at the abandoned rebel camp.
