From ABS-CBN (Feb 25): 2 suspected communist rebels die in army encounter

MAAYON – Two men suspected to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) died in an encounter with troops of the army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (IB) late Friday.

The Philippine Army reportedly received information that several NPA members were spotted in a mountainous area of Barangay Jebaca, Maayon, Capiz, at around 3 p.m. Friday.

According to Maj. Allan Mangaser, executive officer of the 61st IB, they immediately sent troops to the area, but were allegedly shot at by an estimated 7 armed men, so they fired back.

Some of the men were able to escape, but 2 were killed. Based on information from the army, the rebels were supposedly under the leadership of a certain “Ka Reagan.”

The Armed Forces said they are closely monitoring the areas of Dumarao, Maayon, and Cuartero in Capiz for any activities by the reds.
