From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 12): Officer killed, 4 troops hurt in latest clash with ASG bandits in Basilan

An officer from the 19th Special Forces Company was killed while four other troopers were wounded following an encounter with Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits under sub-commander Furuji Indama in Sumisip town, Basilan on Thursday morning.

The clash took place 7:10 a.m. at Barangay Cabcaban of the above-mentioned locality, Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Major Filemon Tan said.

The abovementioned troops were on combat operations when the encounter took place.
Tan said an officer was killed and another four wounded in the fighting.

The WMC spokesperson said the wounded troops were evacuated by UH-IH "Huey" helicopters while artillery units are now preparing for "indirect fire" missions against the bandits.

Aside from artillery fire, airstrikes are now being conducted on the encounter area with troops from the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion, 64th and 68th Infantry Battalions now conducting blocking and pursuit operations against the bandits.
