From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 4): Follower of ASG leader killed in Basilan operations

Military from the Western Mindanao Command have shot and killed a notorious follower of ranking Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) commander Furuji Indama during operations in Basilan Wednesday early morning.

The incident took place around 5:40 a.m. at Barangay Sapah Bulak, Sumisip town, WMC spokesperson Major Filemon Tan said.

Slain during the operations was an ASG bandit identified only as Garabat.
Seized from his possession was an R-4 carbine.

"The Abu Sayyaf members withdrew towards the direction of Sitio Pandekepan through Sitio Gantalan, Barangay Sapah Bulak, Basilan," Tan added.

Troops under the Joint Task Force Basilan proceeded to the encounter to provide follow-on and augmentation forces.

Tan said all other troops were alerted and continue to conduct inspection on all vehicles going to and from the vicinity.

"Pursuit operations are ongoing as of this time," he added.
