From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 24): AFP denies violating unilateral truce in N. Cotabato clash
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) vehemently denied claims that its units violated its unilateral truce following the encounter in Makilala town, North Cotabato which resulted in the death of one New People's Army (NPA) rebel over the weekend.
"The AFP has not violated it's own unilateral ceasefire declaration. It has complied to its declaration of SOMO (Suspension-Of-Military Operations) to the letter," AFP public affairs office chief Col. Edgard Arevalo said Tuesday.
"Excluded in the SOMO however is support to law enforcement operations when so requested by other law enforcement agencies like the PNP," he added.
The SOMO took effect last August when the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and National Democratic Front (NDF) finally agreed to resume peace negotiations.
Arevalo was reacting to NDF threats to rescind the ceasefire in wake of the Makilala, North Cotabato where one rebel was killed and three automatic rifles were seized.
The operation stemmed from alleged harassment and extortion attacks by NPA forces against businessmen in the locality.
