From the Mindanao Times (Dec 20): Heavy equipment torched by alleged NPA rebels anew

ANOTHER dump truck, two payloaders, a backhoe and batching plant were torched by alleged members of New People’s Army (NPA) at the vicinity of Barangay Tres de Mayo, Digos City, Davao del Sur on Sunday around 7 p.m.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, spokesperson of 10th Infantry Division, told TIMES that the said equipment’s were owned by Philmix Cooperative.

Witnesses claimed that around 15 armed men introduced themselves as NPA members.

The armed men confiscated one .38 revolver by security guard Nelson Lonangil. After the incident, perpetrators fled away towards Tres de Mayo river.

Police are looking into extortion as one of the possible motive of the burning.

In a separate interview, Lt. Daryll Cansancio, public information officer of the 73rd Infantry Battalion, said that since November this year, they already recorded 10 torching incidents by alleged NPA members.

Meanwhile, Major Ezra Balagtey, spokesperson of Eastern Mindanao Command, earlier said the ceasefire has resulted to the reduction of the NPA atrocities except arson incidents. However, they are still on guard so they can respond to any eventuality.
