From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 28): AFP mum on Maute Group involvement on foiled IED attack near US Embassy
While the disarmed improvised explosive device (IED) found near the United States Embassy in Manila may be similar to the bombs being made by the Maute Group, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has declined to comment on the involvement of the bandits on the foiled bombing attack.
"You know the signature of the bomb may be similar to the bomb used by the Maute (Group), so there is (that) possibility but we don't have information to support than yet," AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said Monday.
The IED disarmed near the US Embassy is composed of an 81mm mortar and a cellphone triggering device.
Earlier Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said the IED is similar to the one detonated in the Sept. 2 Davao City blast which killed 15 people and wounded 70 others.
"The police is very much in charge of the metropolis for security and we defer to them to lead the investigation so let's wait for their findings, so if the Chief, PNP says this, then he must have a basis to have said that, but for us we continue to monitor and we'll just assist," Padilla added.
