Over the last few weeks, U.S. and Philippine Air Force members trained side by side in mass casualty response, firefighting, security and air operations as part of the most recent U.S. Air Contingent, at the invitation of the Government of the Philippines and at the direction of U.S. Pacific Command.
Much of the training focused on natural disaster and mass casualty response. Local Filipino civilian first responders also participated, exchanging best practices with U.S. forces for treating and transporting patients.
During this Air Contingent rotation, a detachment of C-130 Hercules aircraft and crew members from the 374th Air Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan, and the 36th Contingency Response Group from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, were deployed for two weeks to Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base, Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines.
The first rotation of the Air Contingent stood up at Clark Air Base, Philippines, in April 2016, following a joint announcement by then-Philippine Secretary of National Defense Voltaire Gazmin and U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. The purpose of the Air Contingent is to promote increased interoperability between U.S. and Filipino forces and to further enhance security cooperation between the allies. (US Embassy Manila)
