Firefight erupts between military, BIFF in North Cotabato

From ABS-CBN (Oct 22): Firefight erupts between military, BIFF in North Cotabato

NORTH COTABATO - A firefight ensued Thursday night between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in North Cotabato, the military said.

The 38th Infantry Battalion engaged at least 30 fully armed men led by the BIFF's Abunawas Damiog in Sitio Mirasol, barangay Polomuguen, Midsayap, according to a military report.

The firefight lasted for almost two hours. The AFP reported no casualties, while the number is undetermined on the side of the BIFF.

The armed group allegedly burned down three houses owned by residents identified as Eddie Francisco, Rodrigo Camales and Rogelio Aloro, the military said.

Based on the intelligence report, the BIFF planned a bombing on the founding anniversary of Polomuguen, but failed due to the presence of authorities in the area.

Last October 15, the same detachment was also harassed by the BIFF.
